A man has been threatened at gunpoint during an armed robbery in which £140,000 of parts for a rare Porsche were stolen.

West Yorkshire Police are hunting two men, who were in a white Transit van, who stole parts from a rare Porsche Carrera GT that was being repaired at an industrial unit in Water Lane, Holbeck, on Friday September 25 at around 3.30pm.

It is thought that the men could have links to Manchester or Sheffield.

Detective Inspector Phil Jackson, of Leeds District CID, described the parts as “fairly unique” and has urged people to contact police if they hear of such items being sold.

Shoplifter with nearly 100 convictions banned from Leeds city centre

A shoplifter with nearly 100 convictions to her name has been banned from Leeds city centre for three years.

Her latest conviction was for stealing two jackets, worth £200, from Blacks in The Core shopping centre on October 13, when she was chased and caught after using a foil-lined bag to conceal the garments.

Mitchell, 38, was jailed for 31 weeks by Leeds magistrates this week for the theft and for committing the offences while on a suspended sentence.

But she was also given a three-year criminal behaviour order banning her from entering the city centre.

Deputy District Judge Andrew Jebb told Mitchell: “Businesses in the area are entitled to a rest from your activities”.

New ‘three strikes’ policy to target beggars in Leeds city centre

New ‘three strikes’ policy to target beggars in Leeds city centre
A new ‘three-strikes’ policy is being launched in the latest attempt to rid the streets of Leeds of “hard core” beggars.

Supposed down-and-outs found hassling the public for cash in the city centre will initially be given a written ‘amber’ warning ordering them to stop and providing contact details for support organisations if they have genuine housing and health needs.

Those caught a second time face a ‘red’ warning banning them from a designated area for 48 hours. If they still fail to heed the warnings, they could be then be arrested.

Temporary Inspector Andy Berriman, who runs the City Neighbourhood Policing Team, said there were about two dozen beggars who had refused to engage with the authorities in Leeds.

He said: “The ones we’re dealing with – the hard core element – have got somewhere to live and receive benefits.

“We’re are not targeting destitute people, we’re targeting people who are making a living effectively from professionally begging rather than doing an actual trade or a skill.”

New inquiry into toddler’s tragic heart failure death during Leeds children’s heart unit row

A family’s quest for answers over the death of a toddler weeks after he was operated on at the height of the Leeds children’s heart surgery dispute reached the courtroom today.

Max James Haigh, from Scarborough, was just 14 months old when he died of heart failure 42 days after undergoing a complex procedure to treat his congenital heart problems on March 18 2013 – just a week before NHS England medical director Sir Bruce Keogh controversially suspended all children’s heart surgery in Leeds.

The unit’s closure was overturned two weeks later after it was deemed that data, suggesting high death rates in Leeds that led to the decision, was inaccurate.

Your Leeds United views: Is £5 meal charge pie in the sky?

Just when it seemed things could not get much worse for Leeds United fans, the introduction of a ‘pie-tax’ has left many long-standing supporters questioning their attendance at Elland Road.

As exclusively revealed in your Yorkshire Evening Post, fans buying tickets for the South Stand for upcoming games will have to pay a £5 surcharge in exchange for a meal voucher.

That increases the price of a ticket for Saturday’s game against Hull City to £32 and the upcoming Preston game to £37.

However, Leeds claim: “The club is looking at ways to encourage our supporters to use the stadium’s facilities and catering offerings on matchdays.”

Pledge to help Leeds’ oldest street rise from the ashes

Pledge to help Leeds’ oldest street rise from the ashes

A major regeneration project on one of Leeds’ oldest streets will still go ahead - despite a devastating fire that left one of its shops gutted earlier this month,

The fire at Hills Furniture Shop, on Lower Kirkgate, caused serious structural damage to the building, which was subsequently demolished. There were doubts as to whether the council’s Lower Kirkgate Townscape Heritage Initiative project could continue.

But chiefs have today insisted the project will go ahead - and the fire will not impact on plans to restore the street to its former glory.

Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council’s executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, said: “The fire was obviously unfortunate and caused a significant amount of damage and disruption while the site was made safe.

Christmas is ‘looking tough’ for retailer

ASDA said it expects Christmas to be very tough after 90 per cent of its customers said they would spend the same amount or less money on festive treats this year.

The news came as the Leeds-based grocer reported another sizeable fall in quarterly sales as shoppers decamped to cheaper rivals Aldi and Lidl.

Asda’s CEO Andy Clarke said the group hopes to narrow the price difference between Asda and the discounters to just five per cent. At the moment it believes it is 10 per cent more expensive than Aldi and Lidl after being 20 per cent more expensive four years ago.

Asda said like-for-like sales fell 4.5 per cent in the 13 weeks to September 30, which comes after a 4.7 per cent fall in the second quarter – its worst ever quarterly sales slide, described at the time by Mr Clarke as the group’s “nadir”.

Explaining why sales had not picked up, Mr Clarke said: “The market continues to be hugely challenging. We have seen a marginal improvement.

“We are not the only business to talk about non-food having a very challenging quarter. It was unseasonably warm year on year,” he added, referring to the warm weather which hit autumn clothing sales.

“It will be a very challenging Christmas for all of us.”

Asda said that while customers have £18 a week more to spend than last year, 68 per cent said they plan to spend the same amount on Christmas as last year and 21 per cent said they would spend less.

Despite this, Mr Clarke said that the group won’t be distracted by “short term gimmicks” such as vouchering or complex price matching schemes. Asda recently said it will abandon its Black Friday sale following the mayhem of previous years when fights broke out.

Mr Clarke said customers would prefer lower prices in the run-up to Christmas than big discounts on just one day. So far this year the group has spent £300m on price cuts.
